Chaudhry said Islamabad remains committed to Saudi Arabia’s security. His remarks came amid attacks by the Houthis on Saudi cities.
According to a report by Arab News, the ISPR chief reiterated that Pakistan’s commitment to Saudi Arabia extends to the protection of Mecca and Medina. He said there should be no doubt that Pakistan is present to protect the Haramain Sharifain, referring to Islam’s two holiest sites, Mecca and Medina.
“Islamabad is in contact with regional countries to find a peaceful solution to this war through dialogue,” he said. “Pakistan will continue to defend Saudi Arabia against any aggression.”
Saudi Arabia has accused the Houthis of attempting to attack Mecca. Yemen’s Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi rejected the Saudi allegations as fabricated and false. He said the accusation was being used to secure greater support for what he described as the alleged “military steps” being taken against Yemen.
Al-Houthi also accused Saudi Arabia of failing to take concrete steps toward advancing a political solution when tensions had eased for a period before the latest escalation.
According to a report by news agency Xinhua, al-Houthi said that instead of moving toward a political solution, restrictions on areas of Yemen under Houthi control had been tightened.
Al-Houthi called on his supporters across Yemen to hold large-scale demonstrations on September 18. He said the protests should be held against what he described as Saudi Arabia’s alleged “fabricated accusations and defamation.”
The exchange of statements comes as Pakistan reiterates its commitment to Saudi Arabia’s defence while regional tensions continue to centre on the conflict involving the Houthis and Saudi Arabia.
