Helen Lepcha Medical College Logo Unveiled as Sikkim Honours Freedom Fighter

Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur unveils Helen Lepcha’s bust and the logo of Sikkim’s first government medical college at Sokeythang, honouring her freedom struggle legacy.

 

Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur unveiled the bust of freedom fighter Helen Lepcha and the logo of Helen Lepcha Government Medical College at Sokeythang on Friday, in the presence of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and Health and Family Welfare and Culture Minister G.T. Dhungel.

The medical college, the first government medical college in Sikkim, was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 28, 2026.

The campus has been developed with an Academic Building as its central facility, supported by separate hostels for undergraduate students, interns and postgraduate students. It also includes a Nurses’ Hostel, Nursing Superintendent’s Quarter, Non-Teaching Staff Quarters, Teaching Staff Quarters, Resident Doctors’ Hostel and separate quarters for the Principal and Vice-Principal.

Sports and recreational facilities at the campus include a basketball court, volleyball court, gymnasium and indoor badminton court. Essential utility infrastructure comprises an Underground Reservoir and Pump Room, Electrical Substation, DG Set, Effluent Treatment Plant and a Day Care Centre.

The campus layout also includes internal vehicular roads, pedestrian pathways, landscaped areas, drainage and water channels, along with designated access roads connecting the different facilities.

The medical college has been named after Helen Lepcha (1902–1980), a freedom fighter born at Songbong in Assangthang, Namchi district. Lepcha participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Quit India Movement and dedicated her life to India’s freedom struggle. In recognition of her contribution, the Government of India honoured her with the Tamra Patra in 1972.

The newly unveiled logo of Helen Lepcha Government Medical College represents medical science, education and service to humanity while also reflecting Sikkim’s Himalayan heritage. Its motto is, “Learning to Heal, Serving Humanity.”

The unveiling ceremony was attended by Cabinet ministers, advisors, MLAs, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Gangtok Municipal Corporation, councillors, the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, secretaries, heads of departments, senior officers, officials and other dignitaries.

The unveiling of the bust and logo marks the formal association of Sikkim’s first government medical college with Helen Lepcha’s legacy and establishes the institution’s stated identity around medical education, service to humanity and the state’s Himalayan heritage.
