Abhishek Sharma Smashes Fastest T20 Century, Yuvraj Singh Hails Record Knock
Abhishek Sharma smashed a record-breaking T20 century against Afghanistan, earning praise from mentor Yuvraj Singh. The young batter also matched Virat Kohli’s tally of 10 T20 centuries.
Sharing a photograph of Abhishek Sharma, Yuvraj Singh wrote, “Congratulations Abhishek sir on the fastest 100 in T20 cricket! I had no doubt that your talent and hard work would get you there one day. This is just the beginning of many more records being broken. A great man once said, ‘When people throw stones at you, use them to build a building. Let the bat do the talking’ and you are doing exactly that. Proud of you! Stay humble and keep following the process.”
Abhishek Sharma, who has learned cricketing skills from Yuvraj Singh, faced 34 balls and scored 108 runs in the third match of the T20 series against Afghanistan. His innings included nine fours and 11 sixes. During the knock, Abhishek also added several other records to his name.
He became the Indian batter with 10 T20 centuries, equalling Virat Kohli’s tally of 10 centuries. Abhishek also completed his half-century in just 16 balls in the match. It was the sixth time in his career that he had scored a half-century in 20 balls or fewer for India.
Abhishek is also the fastest Indian batter to score a century in T20 cricket. He broke Rohit Sharma’s record, who had completed a century in 35 balls against Sri Lanka in 2017.
After his century, Abhishek Sharma revealed that Yuvraj Singh had advised him not to try to force a big shot on every ball. If he felt that playing a big shot would be difficult against a particular delivery, Yuvraj had told him to take a single instead.
However, Yuvraj’s advice did not have much visible impact on Abhishek’s innings. Of his 108 runs, 102 came through fours and sixes.
Earlier this year, Abhishek had come close to breaking Yuvraj Singh’s record but missed out. He had subsequently said that breaking the record for a 12-ball half-century would be difficult for anyone.
Abhishek Sharma’s latest innings has therefore added another major milestone to his T20 record, while Yuvraj Singh’s message has underlined the importance of remaining humble and continuing with the process that has taken the young batter to this level.
