In a post on X, Gandhi said, “First Shiv Sena, then NCP, and now Trinamool Congress. Every time, the same pattern - BJP and the Election Commission join forces to split a party. Then its official election symbol is snatched away.” These are Gandhi’s allegations regarding the role of the BJP and the Election Commission.
Gandhi further said that when an entire political party could be “stolen”, it was hardly surprising that the votes of crores of Indians could also be stolen. He described “vote theft, government theft and now party theft” as signs of the decline of democracy.
While expressing concern over the present condition of democracy, Gandhi alleged that the Election Commission, whose constitutional responsibility is to protect the mandate of the people, was instead helping forces that seek to change the people's verdict. He said the issue was not limited to Mamata Banerjee alone, but concerned every political party and every voter who wants free and fair elections.
The remarks came amid the Election Commission's interim decision concerning the TMC. The Commission barred rival factions from using the Trinamool Congress name and its reserved election symbol during the upcoming West Bengal bypolls. The dispute involves competing claims over the party's identity and symbol.
Gandhi specifically drew a comparison with the earlier disputes involving the Shiv Sena and NCP, alleging that the same pattern was now being seen with the TMC. He said that if a complete party could be taken away, there was little surprise in the alleged theft of the votes of millions of Indians.
The political controversy comes against the backdrop of a difficult agricultural season as well. This year's Kharif season began with uneven rainfall. In the absence of sufficient sowing rain, planting was initially delayed. Farmers began sowing after rainfall arrived.
Complaints regarding the germination capacity of soybean seeds were also reported in some areas. It had emerged that soybean crops spread over around 15,000 hectares in the district had failed to germinate.
Rainfall during the last week of July provided some support to the crops for a period. However, rainfall again witnessed a prolonged gap afterwards. Soybean is now at the pod-filling stage, and the lack of sufficient moisture in the soil during this period has affected plant growth as well as the process of grain formation inside the pods.
The developments involving the TMC, along with Gandhi's allegations concerning the Election Commission and the BJP, have brought renewed focus on his claim that protecting the people's electoral mandate and ensuring free and fair elections remain central to the current political dispute.
