Two Workers Rescued Alive After Nine Days Trapped in Nepal Hydropower Tunnel

Two workers were rescued alive after nine days trapped inside Nepal’s Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower tunnel following a glacial collapse and mudslide, as rescue teams continue searching for survivors.

Mechanical foreman Sanjay Sah and supervisor Kabir Maharjan were rescued alive on September 4 after spending nine days trapped 170 meters inside the Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower tunnel in Nepal.

The two workers were pulled to safety nine days after a glacial collapse and mudslide on August 26 devastated the Trishuli River area near the Nepal-China border. Sah told rescuers that he survived by praying and trying to help others escape the flooding of the control room.

A third body was recovered at the site, while voices were heard deeper inside the tunnel, raising renewed hopes that others could still be found.

The disaster has killed 1,344 people, with thousands still missing. The survival of Sah and Maharjan has renewed hope during the continuing search operations.
