Mayor Ritu Tawde Orders Withdrawal of Rs 2.9-Crore Tender After Opposition Backlash

The civic administration formally cancelled the tender on Wednesday evening, 5 August, following criticism over the proposed project. The controversy emerged after the tender came soon after the recent renovation of the 6,000-sq ft heritage bungalow.

The proposed works included installation of bio-absorbent noise barrier panels along ES Patanwala Road, re-laying of interlocking paver blocks after sewer, storm-water drain and utility line works, construction of underground and overhead water tanks, a container-based conference hall with interiors and furniture, internal works for servant and security rooms, along with related mechanical and electrical works.

Tawde rejected claims that the tender was related to the mayor's bungalow and clarified that the project involved the wider premises surrounding her residence.

"The tender mentioned the heritage bungalow, and named it in such a way due to which a wrong impression was created and I had to face unnecessary criticism," she said, alleging that a "fake narrative" was being spread.

In her statement, Tawde said, "The mayor has no information whatsoever regarding this tender, nor is there any reason for them to be aware of it. The mayor has not requested these works. It is specifically emphasised that the proposed works are not inside the Mayor's bungalow."

The withdrawal of the tender came after opposition parties raised objections over the nature and timing of the proposed improvements around the mayor's official residence. The civic administration's decision to scrap the tender has now brought the project under renewed public and political scrutiny.
