The video shows what appears to be a low-flying object moving or hovering in the night sky, emitting colourful lights. A social media post claimed that the sighting took place near the Azadegan Expressway in Tehran. However, there has been no official confirmation of the object's distance, altitude, speed, size or identity.
The footage has emerged at a time of heightened tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel. On September 20, Iranian military officials issued fresh warnings over potential attacks on US bases, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the situation in the region.
The video has prompted several theories online. Some social media users have suggested that the object could be a military drone, while others believe several drones may have been flying in formation. Another theory is that the colourful lights could have come from a distant kite. None of these explanations has been independently verified.
The latest footage has also drawn attention because of its resemblance in timing to a reported incident from nearly 50 years ago.
The earlier incident took place on September 19, 1976. Iranian authorities received reports of a bright unidentified object over Tehran, after which Iranian F-4 fighter jets were sent to investigate. The incident was subsequently documented in US government records, including a Joint Chiefs of Staff report and Defense Intelligence Agency material.
According to a declassified US government report, residents in Tehran's Shemiran area reported strange objects in the sky. An Iranian Air Force F-4 was then scrambled from Shahrokhi Air Base to investigate. The report states that as the aircraft approached the object, it lost instrumentation and communications before regaining them after breaking off the intercept.
The 1976 incident has since become a subject of discussion among UFO researchers, and its similarities with the latest Tehran footage have fuelled fresh speculation. However, there is currently no evidence establishing a connection between the September 20, 2026 video and the 1976 incident. The latest footage itself has also not been independently verified as showing a UFO or any particular type of aircraft.
Meanwhile, tensions between Iran and the United States remain high. Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi said on September 21 that Iran was prepared for a prolonged war and warned that any new aggression would bring changes to its weapons, military tactics and targets.
Mohebbi said, “We will definitely change the geography of the war,” and added that Iran would bring new weapons with new capabilities into the battlefield. He also warned that Iran's targets would not necessarily remain the same as those struck previously and said there were new targets that had not yet been attacked.
The IRGC spokesperson further described the conflict as continuing and said the Guard had already prepared for a long-term war and was now even more prepared for such a scenario. He also claimed that the United States had suffered strategic setbacks, including an inability to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and weaknesses involving its military bases and intelligence facilities. Those claims are statements from the Iranian side and have not been independently established in the footage-related reports.
For now, the object seen over Tehran remains unidentified. While its appearance has generated UFO theories and comparisons with the 1976 incident, there is no confirmed evidence linking it to an extraterrestrial craft, a specific military operation or the ongoing conflict. The video therefore remains an unexplained sighting amid an already tense regional situation.
