MCG and The Art of Living Social Projects Join Hands to Rejuvenate Gurugram's Urban Ponds Through Scientific Restoration Initiative

The Municipal Corporation Gurugram and The Art of Living Social Projects have signed an MoU to restore and sustainably manage urban ponds across Gurugram through scientific restoration, ecological conservation, groundwater recharge, biodiversity enhancement, and community participation, strengthening the city's long-term water security and climate resilience.

In a major step towards restoring Gurugram's deteriorating urban water bodies, the Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) and The Art of Living Social Projects signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on July 17, 2026, to launch a comprehensive programme for the rejuvenation and sustainable management of ponds across Gurugram, Haryana. The partnership aims to revive degraded urban ponds through scientific restoration, ecological conservation, and active community participation while strengthening the city's long-term water security.

Rapid urbanisation has placed Gurugram's lakes and ponds under severe environmental pressure over the years. Encroachments, unplanned urban development, sewage inflow, solid waste dumping, the disappearance of feeder channels, and shrinking catchment areas have significantly contributed to the degradation of these vital water bodies. As a result, many ponds have suffered from extensive siltation, declining water quality, reduced water storage capacity, and weakened groundwater recharge, adversely affecting biodiversity, ecological balance, and the city's long-term water sustainability.

Recognising the urgent need for scientific and sustainable restoration, the Municipal Corporation Gurugram has partnered with The Art of Living Social Projects, the social service arm of The Art of Living. The organisation brings extensive expertise in pond and lake rejuvenation, watershed management, ecological restoration, and community-driven environmental initiatives.

Under the agreement, The Art of Living Social Projects will provide technical expertise and implementation support for the restoration of selected urban ponds. The initiative will begin with detailed technical assessments, including baseline surveys, pond condition evaluations, and catchment mapping to prepare site-specific restoration plans designed to address the unique challenges of each water body.

The restoration programme will include desiltation, removal of accumulated waste, strengthening of pond embankments, restoration of water-holding capacity, and improvements to inlet and outlet systems. The project will also implement Nature-Based Solutions to improve water quality, promote native aquatic biodiversity, and strengthen the surrounding ecosystem through native tree plantation and biodiversity enhancement measures.

Community participation has been identified as a central component of the initiative. Capacity-building programmes, public awareness campaigns, stakeholder consultations, volunteer engagement, and improved waste management practices will encourage local ownership of the restored ponds while creating cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable public spaces for residents.

To ensure long-term sustainability, the initiative will include periodic water quality monitoring and continuous assessment of restoration outcomes. These measures are intended to establish a sustainable framework for the long-term management and maintenance of Gurugram's urban ponds.

By combining scientific expertise, ecological restoration, and community participation, the collaboration seeks to revive urban water bodies, improve groundwater recharge, strengthen biodiversity, and enhance climate resilience. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly to building a healthier, environmentally sustainable, and water-secure Gurugram for future generations.

The Art of Living Social Projects is the social service arm of The Art of Living, a non-profit educational and humanitarian organisation founded in 1981 by globally recognised spiritual leader and humanitarian Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The organisation is committed to addressing India's water challenges through large-scale water conservation initiatives focused on restoring rivers, reviving ecosystems, and improving the quality of life for communities across the country.

The partnership between the Municipal Corporation Gurugram and The Art of Living Social Projects marks a significant milestone in urban environmental restoration, reflecting a long-term commitment to sustainable water resource management, ecological conservation, and community-led environmental stewardship in one of India's fastest-growing cities.
