The Indian Navy commissioned INS Malvan, the second Mahe-class anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft, at a ceremony held in Karwar on Wednesday. The commissioning ceremony was led by Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, marking a significant milestone in the Navy’s efforts towards strengthening maritime security capabilities through indigenous shipbuilding.

Built by Cochin Shipyard, INS Malvan has more than 80 percent indigenous content, reflecting India's growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The warship measures 80 meters in length and has a displacement of 1,100 tonnes. It is equipped with advanced sonar systems, water-jet propulsion technology, and a range of weapons, including anti-submarine rockets, torpedoes, and a 30mm gun.

Designed for critical maritime operations, INS Malvan will support missions such as surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and mine countermeasures. Its advanced capabilities enhance the Navy’s ability to monitor and respond to underwater threats in shallow coastal waters.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan highlighted the vessel’s connection with the naval legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and noted that INS Malvan is the first warship to be commissioned at Karwar. The induction also marked the seventh Navy commissioning this year.
