Pakistan-Made Bedsheet Found at Pune Fair Sparks Online Debate Amid Import Ban

According to the woman, she purchased the bedsheet along with two or three other household items at a fair held near Shree Morya Gosavi Ganpati Mandir in Chinchwad. The fair is organized every month on Sankashti Chaturthi and attracts large numbers of devotees. She said she did not notice anything unusual about the product at the time of purchase.

The issue came to light only after she washed the bedsheet and discovered a sticker attached to it. In a video that has since gone viral, the woman displays the sticker and claims it clearly reads “Made in Pakistan.” Expressing anger over the discovery, she stated that the finding was particularly concerning to her because she lives close to the border.

“Whom are we giving employment to? And first of all, how is this even coming here?” she asks in the video.

The woman further alleged that many other visitors to the fair may have unknowingly purchased similar products. She said she conducted an online search to understand how such goods could be available in India and found information indicating that imports from Pakistan are prohibited.

“When I searched on Google, it said Pakistani goods are banned in India. They cannot be imported here. If you search, you’ll see everything. It’s completely banned,” she says in the video.

Urging consumers to exercise caution, she added, “So please, be a little careful while buying things. I’m completely aware now. So, I’m telling you all. Open your eyes while buying products. We often buy things from roadside stalls, and unwanted things end up entering our homes.”

The video quickly attracted mixed reactions from social media users. While some supported her concerns, others questioned the significance of the issue.

One user sarcastically commented, “Just a suggestion. Make similar videos on ‘Made in China’ products.”

Another user remarked, “So what? Is it poking you while sleeping...?”

A third user reacted by saying, “Oh man, can we focus on bigger things? Maybe it's an export surplus of cloth, so what?! How paranoid we get!”

Another commenter questioned, “Did you ever check hospital equipment?”

The controversy has also renewed attention on India's trade restrictions concerning Pakistan-origin goods. Importing goods from Pakistan is currently prohibited under Indian trade regulations.

In May 2025, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry formally notified that the “import of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan to India” was banned. The notification clarified that the restriction applies to goods imported directly as well as through any alternative trade route.

The directive came into immediate effect on May 2, 2025, through the insertion of Paragraph 2.20A into the Foreign Trade Policy 2023. The government stated that the prohibition would remain in force until further orders.

The viral video has reignited public discussion over product sourcing, consumer awareness, and enforcement of trade regulations, with many questioning how a product allegedly carrying a Pakistan-origin label could have reached a local marketplace despite the existing nationwide import ban.
