According to police sources, Mumbai Police had been investigating the Maharashtra Teacher Eligibility Test paper leak case when Gupta's wife was arrested during the course of the probe. An alleged associate was subsequently detained, and investigators said their interrogation revealed several important details that opened a new direction in the investigation. These findings prompted police to expand the search for Gupta before successfully apprehending him in Patna.
Investigators further stated that accused arrested earlier in the Maharashtra TET paper leak case identified Vijendra Gupta during questioning. They allegedly told police that they worked for him. Following these disclosures, Mumbai Police began dismantling the alleged network layer by layer. Investigators first traced the alleged associates, then questioned individuals connected to his family before ultimately reaching Gupta. Police are now attempting to determine his alleged role in leaking the examination paper, distributing it to candidates, and operating the alleged network.
According to investigating agencies, Vijendra Gupta's name has surfaced in several competitive examination investigations over the past few years. During the investigation into the Bihar Teacher Recruitment Examination (TRE) in 2024, his name was reportedly mentioned among the alleged conspirators. In addition, media reports in the NEET-UG 2024 case described him as an alleged "liner" or contact person. However, according to publicly available information at that time, investigating agencies did not confirm that they had obtained conclusive evidence directly linking him to the paper leak. His name also surfaced during the investigation into the Odisha SSC (JE) paper leak case while investigators examined a Bihar-linked network.
Mumbai Police will now continue questioning Vijendra Gupta to identify others allegedly involved in the Maharashtra TET paper leak network. Investigators are also examining whether the network has links to alleged paper leak syndicates operating in other states. Police believe the interrogation could reveal significant information about the alleged examination mafia, its functioning, and other accused connected to the case. The investigation is currently ongoing.
