Viral Tezpur Video Sparks Debate on Moral Policing After Student Confronts Public Shaming Over Clothing

A viral video from Tezpur, Assam, has triggered a nationwide debate on moral policing after student Anushka Sharma confronted an elderly woman who allegedly shamed her over her clothing and character. The incident has sparked discussions on personal freedom, women’s rights, bodily autonomy, and public scrutiny in modern society.

A viral video from Tezpur, Assam, has ignited a widespread debate on moral policing after a student alleged that she was publicly shamed by an elderly woman over her choice of clothing.

The student, identified as Anushka Sharma, said she had travelled into town on her scooter to purchase materials for an upcoming practical examination when the incident occurred. According to Sharma, an elderly woman began following her and making critical remarks about her appearance.

The video captures the woman objecting to Sharma’s outfit and allegedly making personal remarks about her character. The woman reportedly described the student as “characterless,” accused her of wearing what she referred to as “indecent clothing,” and claimed that girls dressed in such a manner “destroy society” and should not be allowed to live there.

Refusing to remain silent, Sharma stopped her scooter, took out her phone, and began recording the confrontation. During the video, she showed viewers her attire, consisting of a black tank top and trousers, and questioned what was inappropriate about her clothing.

As the exchange continued, the elderly woman maintained her criticism, accusing Sharma of exposing too much skin. Sharma responded by highlighting what she described as hypocrisy in the woman’s remarks, pointing out that the woman’s own petticoat was visible beneath her nightgown.

The video quickly spread across social media platforms, triggering extensive discussions about moral policing and the scrutiny women often face regarding their clothing and personal choices in public spaces.

A large number of social media users expressed support for the student, arguing that a person’s clothing should not be used to judge character. Many users stated that women continue to face unsolicited criticism and public scrutiny despite having the right to make their own decisions about how they dress.

One user wrote, “The girl did nothing wrong. These older people should learn to respect other people. Harassing people in the name of society does not work anymore.”

Another commented, “A girl’s dress is her choice. Respect is our responsibility. Do not change her clothes—change your mindset.”

A third user said, “This is so sad; people are still questioning a girl’s attire and judging her character by it.”

While the overwhelming majority of online reactions criticised the elderly woman’s behaviour, a small section of conservative users defended her actions, arguing that public attire should adhere to traditional standards of modesty.

The incident has reignited conversations about personal freedom, bodily autonomy, and the challenges women continue to encounter while navigating public spaces. The viral confrontation from Tezpur has become the latest flashpoint in a broader national debate over individual choice, social judgment, and the boundaries of public conduct.
