INDIA RENEWS GLOBAL PUSH FOR LONG-PENDING UN TREATY AGAINST TERRORISM

India has renewed its demand for the adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations, warning that terrorist groups are increasingly using advanced technologies such as drones. India urged nations to overcome political divisions and strengthen global cooperation against terrorism.

India has renewed its urgent call for the adoption of a comprehensive international treaty against terrorism, a proposal it first placed before the global community nearly three decades ago. The appeal was made at the United Nations General Assembly’s legal committee, where India warned that terrorist organisations are becoming increasingly sophisticated by exploiting advanced technologies, including drones, to strengthen their operational capabilities.

Addressing the committee on Thursday, R. Mythili, a legal officer with India’s Mission to the United Nations, expressed deep concern over the growing threat posed by terrorist groups and the challenges they present to international peace and security. She stressed the importance of overcoming the prolonged deadlock surrounding the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism, which remains unresolved despite years of discussions.

Ms. Mythili strongly criticised attempts by some countries to justify terrorism on political grounds. Referring to arguments that have previously portrayed certain terrorist groups as freedom fighters, she warned that such positions continue to undermine global efforts to combat terrorism. She emphasised that political considerations should not be allowed to weaken the international community’s collective response to the threat.

Calling for greater unity among nations, Ms. Mythili urged member states to move beyond longstanding divisions and work towards finalising the convention. She cautioned that the effectiveness of the global fight against terrorism is being eroded by conflicting political agendas and inconsistent approaches to addressing terrorist activities.

India’s renewed appeal comes at a significant moment for international counterterrorism efforts. The call follows the adoption of the “Pact of the Future” at last month’s United Nations Summit, where countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening global cooperation against terrorism and emerging security threats.

The latest intervention underscores India’s long-standing position that a unified and legally binding international framework is essential to address evolving terrorist challenges. As extremist groups increasingly adopt modern technologies to expand their reach and capabilities, India has reiterated that global consensus and collective action are critical to ensuring an effective and sustained response to terrorism worldwide.
