Rooftop Solar Emerges as a Long-Term Financial Asset for India’s Urban Middle Class

Rising electricity tariffs and government subsidies are making rooftop solar a financially attractive investment for India’s urban middle class. Industry experts say most systems recover costs within five years and continue generating savings for over two decades, transforming rooftop solar into a long-term financial asset for households.

As electricity tariffs continue to rise and government subsidies reduce installation costs, rooftop solar is rapidly becoming a financially attractive investment for India’s urban middle class. Industry leaders say the appeal of rooftop solar in India has never been driven primarily by environmental concerns. Instead, the strongest selling point remains simple economics: a one-time investment that can recover its cost within a few years and deliver decades of sharply reduced electricity bills.

According to Shreya Mishra, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of SolarSquare, rooftop solar systems in India generally achieve break-even within three to five years and continue generating electricity for nearly 25 to 27 years. She said households effectively receive 20 to 22 years of free electricity after recovering their initial investment.

The financial viability of rooftop solar depends on four major factors: upfront installation cost, government subsidies, monthly electricity consumption, and local electricity tariffs. Industry executives state that a typical urban household consuming between 300 and 500 units of electricity per month usually installs a rooftop solar system ranging from 3 kW to 5 kW capacity.

According to SolarSquare, one kilowatt of rooftop solar capacity in India generates nearly 1,400 to 1,450 units of electricity annually. Based on this estimate, a 3 kW system can generate approximately 4,200 to 4,350 units each year, while a 5 kW system can produce nearly 7,000 to 7,250 units annually.

For households paying between Rs 7 and Rs 10 per unit of electricity, the resulting savings can be substantial. A family consuming nearly 400 units every month may spend around Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 annually on electricity bills. Over a 25-year period, that expenditure can exceed Rs 10 lakh if power tariffs continue rising. Solar companies argue that rooftop systems can eliminate a major portion of these long-term electricity costs.

The largest obstacle for many households has traditionally been the upfront installation expense. However, government subsidies are now significantly reducing that burden. Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the central government provides subsidies of up to Rs 78,000 for residential rooftop solar systems.

Several states are also offering additional financial incentives. According to SolarSquare, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi provide additional subsidies of up to Rs 30,000, while Assam offers incentives of up to Rs 45,000. Industry experts say these subsidies substantially reduce the effective installation cost for middle-class households.

Gagan Chanana, Joint Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Solar Modules and Cells business at JAKSON Group, said declining hardware prices have further improved affordability. He stated that there has never been a more favorable time for households to transition to solar energy.

Industry estimates place the average payback period for rooftop solar systems at nearly four to five years. This period represents the time required to recover the initial investment through savings on electricity bills. After this stage, the electricity generated by the system becomes effectively free, excluding minor maintenance expenses.

Executives say this extended savings period is what makes rooftop solar financially compelling. Unlike most household appliances that depreciate over time without generating returns, solar panels continue reducing electricity bills every month for more than two decades.

However, industry leaders caution that returns depend heavily on installation quality. They advise consumers to focus not only on the lowest installation quote but also on engineering standards, system durability, and after-sales service support.

Mishra said households should verify whether installers provide electricity generation guarantees, conduct proper shadow analysis, and use durable mounting structures capable of lasting 25 years without rusting or causing leakage problems. Chanana added that consumers should ensure solar modules are government-approved under the ALMM list and should understand long-term panel degradation rates before making a purchase decision.

Experts also stress the importance of selecting the correct system size. Oversized systems can unnecessarily increase costs, while undersized systems may reduce long-term savings potential. Industry executives recommend evaluating at least one year of electricity bills before determining the ideal rooftop solar capacity.

Monsoon-related performance remains a common concern among consumers. However, industry executives say annual electricity generation estimates already account for seasonal reductions caused by rainy weather. While electricity generation declines during monsoon months, higher summer production compensates for the shortfall over the course of the year. As a result, the overall payback calculations remain largely unaffected.

Industry executives further argue that rooftop solar offers an important long-term advantage by shielding households from future electricity tariff increases. Grid electricity prices generally rise over time, but once a rooftop solar system is installed, a substantial portion of household electricity generation becomes fixed-cost.

As tariffs continue increasing year after year, the financial savings generated through rooftop solar also grow automatically. For many urban households, rooftop solar is increasingly being viewed not merely as an energy solution, but as a long-term financial asset capable of generating savings for more than two decades after the initial investment is recovered.
