Tamil Nadu CM Orders Closure of 717 Liquor Shops Near Schools, Temples and Bus Stands

Tamil Nadu CM has ordered the closure of 717 TASMAC liquor shops located within 500 meters of schools, temples, mosques, churches and bus stands following a statewide survey. The move expands previous distance restrictions and has drawn praise from Kamal Haasan while facing criticism from the DMK over alleged ongoing violations.

In a major administrative move, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has ordered the closure of 717 TASMAC liquor shops located near schools, temples and bus stands across the state. The decision follows a statewide survey that identified outlets operating within 500 meters of sensitive public locations.

The order targets 717 TASMAC outlets situated within 500 meters of these sites, including 276 shops located near temples, mosques or churches, 186 near schools or colleges, and 255 near bus stations. The directive significantly expands earlier regulations that limited liquor shops to a distance of 50-100 meters from worship sites or educational institutions. The new order now extends restrictions to bus stands as well.

Authorities have been instructed to complete the closures within two weeks, marking one of the most extensive actions against liquor outlets in Tamil Nadu in recent years.

Actor and politician Kamal Haasan praised the decision, stating that it meets the expectations of families. However, the ruling also triggered political criticism, with the DMK describing the move as empty public relations amid continuing complaints regarding ongoing violations and references to past government closures.
