They also point to natural farming, ethanol blending, solar pumps, and renewable energy initiatives as long-term efforts capable of gradually reducing dependence on imported fuel and chemicals.
Analysts say the rationale behind such appeals lies in the broader theory that millions of small behavioural and consumption changes by citizens can collectively create significant macroeconomic effects. These shifts, they argue, can aid foreign exchange conservation, reduce inflationary pressures, strengthen domestic industries, and foster long-term self-reliance during periods of global disruption.
India’s three state-run fuel retailers — Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited — continue to play a crucial role in maintaining stable domestic petrol and diesel prices amid unprecedented volatility in global energy markets.
International energy markets remain under intense pressure due to persistent threats around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy corridor through which nearly one-fifth of global oil trade transits. Industry assessments indicate that idle global fuel supplies, rising freight and marine insurance costs, and sharply inflated refining margins have collectively intensified volatility in crude and refined fuel markets.

In contrast, India has so far managed to maintain more consistent fuel availability and controlled retail pricing despite elevated global crude prices.
Analysts say that when tensions involving Iran first escalated, global expectations were that the disruption would remain brief. Governments and energy companies initially attempted to absorb the additional burden while anticipating de-escalation. However, as the conflict prolonged and evolved into a stalemate, the cumulative impact of high crude prices, elevated logistics costs, and rising insurance premiums intensified pressure across global markets.
The strain is not limited to fuel alone. Fertiliser prices have remained elevated globally for several years, making this yet another year in which India continues to shield domestic consumers and farmers from the full impact of steep international price increases.
