Toyota to Establish Fourth Vehicle Assembly Plant in India, Expanding Annual Capacity to 500,000 Units

Toyota Motor Corp. has announced plans to build a fourth vehicle assembly plant in India, expanding its annual production capacity to 500,000 units. Located in Maharashtra, the SUV-focused facility is set to begin operations in early 2029. The move strengthens Toyota’s manufacturing base across Karnataka and Maharashtra, supports exports, and builds on its partnership with Suzuki Motor Corp. The company reported strong growth in India with 371,000 units sold in fiscal 2025, marking a 21.3 percent increase year-on-year and highlighting rising demand in the Indian automotive market.

Toyota Motor Corp. announced on May 11 its decision to construct a fourth vehicle assembly plant in India, significantly strengthening its manufacturing footprint in the world’s third-largest automotive market. The expansion will lift the company’s total annual production capacity in the country to approximately 500,000 units.

The company currently operates two vehicle manufacturing facilities in Karnataka State, located in southern India. A third plant is already under construction in the same state and is scheduled to commence operations later this year, marking a continued phase of rapid capacity expansion.

The proposed fourth facility will be established in Maharashtra State in western India. The new plant will focus on the production of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and is expected to begin operations in the first half of 2029. Once operational, it will have an annual production capacity of 100,000 units. Toyota has not disclosed the investment amount allocated for the project.

According to the company, the fourth plant will serve as a strategic production base designed to ensure a stable and consistent supply of vehicles not only for customers in India but also for export markets across surrounding regions. The expansion reflects Toyota’s broader strategy to reinforce India as a key global manufacturing and export hub.
