Hyundai Prepares New Mid-Size SUV for India, Next-Generation Bayon Likely to Arrive in 2027

Hyundai is preparing to launch the next-generation Hyundai Bayon in India as a new mid-size SUV expected in FY2027. The SUV is likely to sit between the Venue and Creta, offering petrol and CNG powertrains while helping Hyundai strengthen its presence across India’s competitive SUV market.

Hyundai Motor India is preparing to expand its sport utility vehicle portfolio in India with a brand-new model that is expected to be significantly larger than earlier reports had suggested. The upcoming vehicle is likely to be the next-generation Hyundai Bayon, which is expected to enter the Indian market during the second half of next year.

Contrary to previous speculation that Hyundai could redesign the Bayon into a compact sub-four-metre SUV aimed at rivals such as the Maruti Fronx, fresh details now indicate that the model will instead compete in the highly contested mid-size SUV segment.

The current Bayon sold in international markets measures approximately 4.18 metres in length, and reports suggest the next-generation model will retain a similar footprint. This would firmly position the SUV within India’s mid-size SUV category, allowing Hyundai to target a wider customer base seeking a balance between practicality, premium appeal, and affordability.

During Hyundai Motor India’s Q4 FY2026 earnings conference call, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Tarun Garg confirmed that the company plans to launch a new mid-size SUV in FY2027. He specifically stated that the upcoming model would measure more than four metres in length, reinforcing expectations that the new Bayon will not enter the compact SUV segment.

The upcoming SUV is expected to be positioned between the next-generation Hyundai Venue and the future Hyundai Creta in Hyundai’s expanding utility vehicle lineup. The strategy could help the company attract urban buyers seeking a more spacious and premium alternative to compact SUVs while remaining more accessible than the Creta.

Hyundai is also expected to offer the new Bayon with a naturally aspirated petrol engine alongside a factory-fitted compressed natural gas variant. The CNG version is likely to feature a dual-cylinder setup designed to preserve luggage capacity while enhancing practicality for daily use.

At launch, the company is expected to focus on internal combustion engine powertrains, although hybrid and electric versions could be evaluated later depending on consumer demand and market conditions.

Meanwhile, the next-generation Creta, expected to arrive in 2027, is reportedly set to become larger and more premium than the current version. Reports indicate that the future Creta could receive an advanced platform, hybrid technology, and extensive feature upgrades.

The planned repositioning of the Creta would allow Hyundai to establish the Bayon as a more affordable and city-oriented mid-size SUV while pushing the Creta further into the premium segment. The move highlights Hyundai’s broader strategy of strengthening its presence across every major SUV category in India’s rapidly evolving passenger vehicle market.
