Vijay Intensifies Spiritual Outreach with Temple Visits Ahead of Tamil Nadu Poll Results
Actor-politician Vijay intensifies his spiritual outreach with key temple visits ahead of Tamil Nadu election results on May 4. His actions highlight strategic positioning against major parties DMK and AIADMK amid a high-stakes five-cornered contest.
A day after offering prayers at the revered Tiruchendur Murugan Temple, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief is set to travel to Shirdi on Wednesday morning to worship at the Sai Baba Temple. His visits come at a critical juncture, just a day before exit poll announcements and less than a week before vote counting.
On Tuesday, Vijay performed the “Chathru Samhara Pooja” at Tiruchendur, a ritual traditionally believed to help defeat adversaries, overcome obstacles, and navigate legal challenges. Historian Nanditha Krishna explained the ritual’s significance, stating that Murugan is revered as a war deity and that ancient Tamil rulers worshipped before entering battles and offered gratitude after victory. She also highlighted the temple’s enduring spiritual significance, recalling that it remained unharmed during the tsunami, reinforcing its reputation as a site believed to grant blessings.
Temple priest Ramjee noted that the ritual has been followed since the era of kings, with individuals in politics, arts, and business performing it for protection against adversaries. He added that devotees widely believe prayers offered at the temple are fulfilled.
Vijay’s temple visits come as he positions himself against both the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, both of which possess strong organisational networks. While his party has gained notable support among youth and women, the extent to which this translates into electoral success remains uncertain.
Tamil Nadu witnessed a five-cornered electoral contest. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is aiming for a second consecutive term, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is attempting a political comeback after three successive defeats. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam is contesting its first election with the ambition of capturing power.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister M K Stalin was seen cycling in Kodaikanal during a brief break, while AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami remained at his hometown Salem. Reacting to ongoing developments, DMK spokesperson Syed Hafeezullah stated that the party has delivered in governance and worked to ensure continuity of its development model.
As Tamil Nadu approaches the decisive moment of vote counting, Vijay’s temple visits underscore a blend of spiritual symbolism and political strategy, reflecting the high-stakes atmosphere of an election that could reshape the state’s political landscape.
