Although Abhishek Banerjee formally entered politics in 2011, his political instincts were evident much earlier. In 1990, following an attack on Mamata Banerjee, he reportedly displayed early political awareness as a child, raising slogans at home and demanding accountability from the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Mamata Banerjee later recalled this incident at a 2023 rally, noting his early engagement with political issues.
His formal political journey began in 2011, a landmark year that saw the collapse of the Left Front’s 34-year rule in West Bengal and the rise of the Trinamool Congress to power under Mamata Banerjee. At just 23, Abhishek Banerjee was appointed national president of the All India Trinamool Youth Congress. His ascent within the party was rapid, marked by efforts to professionalise grassroots organisational structures, a shift from the emotionally driven, street-centric politics associated with the party’s senior leadership.
In 2014, he entered electoral politics, winning the Diamond Harbour constituency and becoming the youngest Member of Parliament in the 16th Lok Sabha at the age of 26. His political growth has since been reflected in his increasing electoral margins. He secured victory in 2014 by approximately 71,000 votes. Despite a significant Bharatiya Janata Party surge in 2019, he expanded his winning margin to over 320,000 votes. In 2024, he achieved a record-breaking victory margin exceeding 700,000 votes, consolidating his political standing.
By 2021, his influence within the Trinamool Congress had become institutionalised when he was appointed the party’s General Secretary. While not formally घोषित, he emerged as the principal face of the party’s national ambitions and a key figure in countering the Bharatiya Janata Party’s expansion in the state.
However, his political career has not been without controversy. He has faced allegations related to corruption and has been questioned by central investigative agencies in connection with a multi-crore cash-for-jobs scam and a coal pilferage case. These legal challenges have added complexity to his political trajectory.
As West Bengal approaches the 2026 election, the contest represents more than a routine political exercise for Abhishek Banerjee. It is a critical test of his leadership and relevance within the party, particularly after reported internal differences between the party’s senior leadership and the younger faction aligned with him. These tensions now appear to have subsided, with a coordinated strategy assigning distinct roles to both leaders.
Mamata Banerjee continues to anchor governance and political strategy from Kolkata, while Abhishek Banerjee has taken on an extensive campaign role, particularly in rural and southern regions of the state. He also serves as one of the party’s
voices in New Delhi, actively challenging the central government and the Bharatiya Janata Party on key issues in Parliament.
A defining feature of his approach is the adoption of a data-driven, youth-focused campaign strategy. His emphasis on booth-level management and targeted delivery of welfare schemes is expected to strengthen the party’s performance in closely contested constituencies. This modernised campaign framework seeks to position the Trinamool Congress as a technologically adept and organisationally resilient force capable of countering the Bharatiya Janata Party’s extensive political machinery.
The 2026 election thus serves as a litmus test for Abhishek Banerjee. It marks his first major state election as General Secretary and offers a decisive opportunity to establish himself as a leading figure in West Bengal politics, beyond the legacy of his aunt. The outcome will not only shape his political future but also redefine the leadership dynamics within the Trinamool Congress.
