Daring ATM Heist Near Police Station Sparks Security Concerns in Motihari
A daring ATM theft near a police station in Motihari, Bihar, has exposed serious security lapses. Criminals used a gas cutter to steal nearly 28 lakh rupees from an SBI ATM, prompting suspensions and a high-level investigation by a Special Investigation Team.
According to available information, approximately 30 lakh rupees had been loaded into the ATM a day prior to the incident by the owner of the Hitachi agency responsible for cash management. Late at night, the culprits used a gas cutter to break open the ATM machine and fled with the cash. Preliminary estimates suggest that nearly 28 lakh rupees were stolen, although the exact amount is still being assessed by authorities.
The audacity of the crime, carried out in close proximity to an active police station, has intensified concerns about the effectiveness of the security system in the region. Local residents have expressed deep anxiety, questioning how such an incident could occur in an area where police presence is constant.
Taking immediate action, Superintendent of Police Swarn Prabhat suspended the patrolling team that was on duty at the time of the incident. Additionally, a Special Investigation Team has been formed under the leadership of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Sadar to conduct a thorough probe into the matter.
Initial findings have revealed a critical lapse, as the ATM’s alarm system was reportedly non-functional, preventing timely alerts during the crime. Police are currently examining footage from nearby closed-circuit television cameras and have stated that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the culprits at the earliest.
This incident underscores a glaring vulnerability in the security infrastructure, especially in high-risk zones such as financial installations near law enforcement facilities. The case has not only exposed operational lapses but also intensified public scrutiny of policing efficiency in the region.
