Gaurav Gogoi Faces Political Scrutiny Amid Assam Election Battle and Allegations by Chief Minister
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi contests from Jorhat in Assam Assembly elections amid allegations by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding his child’s passport. The political battle highlights rising tensions and scrutiny in a high-stakes electoral contest in Assam.
The electoral contest intensified during the campaign as Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a sharp attack on the Congress candidate. Sarma alleged that Gogoi surrendered his child’s Indian passport in 2022 in favour of a British passport, raising questions regarding his allegiance to the nation. The claim added a layer of political controversy to an already high-stakes contest in the state.
Born in September 1982, Gaurav Gogoi is the son of veteran Congress leader Tarun Gogoi, who served as the Chief Minister of Assam. He completed his schooling at St Columba’s School in Delhi before pursuing a Bachelor of Technology degree from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in 2004. Following a brief professional stint in marketing with Airtel, Gogoi moved to the United States to obtain a master’s degree in Public Administration.
Gogoi entered active politics in 2014, securing a decisive victory from the Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency. He defeated Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Mrinal Kumar Saikia by a margin of 93,000 votes. Building on this success, he retained the seat in the 2019 general elections, overcoming Asom Gana Parishad candidate Moni Madhab Mahanta with a significantly increased margin of 209,994 votes.
The Jorhat contest and the accompanying allegations have brought Gogoi into sharp political focus, underscoring the intensity of electoral competition in Assam. The developments reflect the broader dynamics of political rivalry in the state, where personal credibility and national allegiance have become central themes in campaign narratives.
