Bangladesh Formalizes Extradition Demand for Sheikh Hasina Amid Diplomatic Reset in Delhi
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman reiterates the formal demand for former PM Sheikh Hasina’s extradition from India under the bilateral treaty. Following talks in Delhi with S. Jaishankar and Ajit Doval, the new BNP government under PM Tarique Rahman seeks to reset ties, address energy shortages, and restore visa services while navigating complex judicial processes.
The diplomatic engagement comes as Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who took office in February, looks to stabilize ties with New Delhi. Minister Khalilur Rahman expressed a reasoned optimism regarding the bilateral future, noting that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have already exchanged letters and conducted phone conversations aimed at advancing a relationship of mutual consequence. While a state visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India is confirmed, the specific dates remain under finalization pending the completion of preparatory activities. During his short interview before departing for Dhaka, Mr. Rahman emphasized that the demand for Sheikh Hasina’s return is a formal treaty-based obligation, though he remained guarded about the specific nuances of the ongoing dialogue, stating he could not disclose everything.
Minister Rahman further warned of an impending regional crisis, comparing the current economic climate to the 1970s oil shocks and cautioning that the 1980s could become a lost decade of development if regional powers do not band together. Bangladesh, currently chairing BIMSTEC, expressed an eagerness to revitalize SAARC, which has long been suspended due to Indo-Pakistan tensions over cross-border terrorism. Mr. Rahman argued that if regional stakeholders reach out and address the reasons for non-participation, a SAARC summit could finally be realized. The outcome of these "follow-on meetings" and the upcoming high-level visit will prove critical in determining whether the two nations can successfully navigate the legal complexities of extradition while maintaining their historic and warm bilateral partnership.
