Human Rights Form the Bedrock of Social Democracy, Says President Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu highlights human rights as the essential foundation of social democracy, stressing their role in ensuring equality, dignity, freedom from exploitation and barrier-free education. She asserts that protecting these rights strengthens a nation’s democratic fabric and fosters a more humane society.

President Droupadi Murmu has underscored that human rights are the essential foundation of a just and inclusive social democracy, asserting that these rights ensure equality, dignity and freedom for every citizen. Speaking on the core values that sustain a healthy democratic society, the President noted that human rights empower individuals to live without fear, seek education without barriers, remain free from exploitation in the workplace and age with dignity in an environment of respect.

She emphasised that when these rights are safeguarded, society becomes stronger, more responsive and more humane. According to her, the protection of human rights is not merely a constitutional obligation but a moral commitment that upholds the integrity of democratic structures. She added that a nation rooted in the principles of justice and equality is better equipped to address social challenges and create pathways for inclusive progress.

Highlighting the broader implications, President Murmu stated that the defence of human rights ultimately determines the strength of a nation’s social democracy. Ensuring these rights for all, she stressed, is what enables true participation, fairness and shared growth, forming the cornerstone of a sensitive and resilient democratic society.
