President Murmu Underscores Human Rights as the Foundation of Social Democracy

President Droupadi Murmu, speaking in New Delhi, highlighted human rights as essential pillars of social democracy, stressing the importance of living without fear, learning without barriers, working without exploitation and aging with dignity. Her remarks underscored the role of these rights in ensuring equality and justice in society.

President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday emphasized that human rights form the bedrock of a truly functioning social democracy, underscoring their role in ensuring dignity, security and equal opportunity for every citizen. Speaking in New Delhi, she said that these rights empower individuals to live without fear, pursue education without barriers, work without exploitation and age with respect and autonomy.

Murmu noted that such freedoms are not optional privileges but essential components of a just and inclusive society. By safeguarding these rights, she said, nations strengthen public trust and reinforce the principles of equality and justice that hold democratic systems together. Her remarks highlighted the broader responsibility of institutions, communities and citizens to protect these values and ensure they remain accessible to all.

In her address, the President reiterated that the recognition and protection of human rights directly influence the quality of civic life and the resilience of democratic structures. She stressed that when individuals are free to learn, work and live with dignity, societies progress toward greater harmony and social balance.

Murmu concluded that India’s long-standing commitment to human rights must continue to guide its democratic ethos, serving as a constant reminder that the strength of any democracy lies in how well it upholds the dignity and freedom of its people.
