Trump Sparks Outrage With Racist Broadside Against Somali Immigrants and Rep. Ilhan Omar
Donald Trump triggered widespread condemnation after a Pennsylvania rally in which he labeled Somalia “filthy, dirty, disgusting” and called Somali immigrants “garbage,” while attacking Rep. Ilhan Omar. His remarks revived controversy over past racist comments and intensified debate over immigration and xenophobia in American politics.
Speaking to supporters while highlighting his long-standing anti-immigration platform, Trump questioned why the US could not instead admit migrants from nations such as Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. “Why can’t we have some people from Norway, Sweden, just a few?” he said. “But we always take people from Somalia, places that are a disaster, right? Filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime. The only thing they’re good at is going after ships.”
He then turned his attack toward Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who arrived in the US as a refugee from Somalia, describing her as “garbage” while renewing familiar criticisms of her political positions. Omar, one of the first Muslim women to serve in the US Congress, has frequently been the target of Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric since his first presidential term.
Trump also publicly acknowledged during the rally that he had used the phrase “shithole countries” in a 2018 White House meeting to refer to Haiti and African nations—remarks that sparked international outrage at the time. He appeared to boast about the episode, further reinforcing his reputation for harsh, racially charged attacks on immigrants and communities of color.
The Pennsylvania rally underscored Trump’s continued reliance on divisive language as a political strategy and reignited debates about racism, xenophobia, and the broader impact of such rhetoric on American public life. His comments once again pushed immigration and racial equality into the national spotlight, raising concerns about the social and political consequences of derogatory narratives targeting minority communities.
