Unnao Purges Over 319,000 Names From Voter Rolls in Major Verification Drive
A major voter-list verification drive in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao district has resulted in the removal of over 319,000 absent, shifted, and deceased voters under the SIR campaign. With more than 98% of the verification completed, officials say the move aims to improve accuracy and strengthen electoral integrity.
District authorities confirmed that 98.34% of the verification work has already been completed, marking one of the most extensive voter-list audits conducted in the region. According to officials, the removed entries consisted primarily of absent, shifted, and deceased (ASD) voters whose names remained on the rolls despite no longer residing in or being eligible within the district.
The SIR campaign—launched to ensure cleaner electoral records ahead of upcoming democratic exercises—focused on identifying voters who could not be traced, had relocated without updating information, or had passed away. Officials said the initiative was necessary to prevent discrepancies that often lead to inflated voter counts and administrative challenges during elections.
The scale of the deletions underscores both the depth of irregularities previously present in the lists and the administration’s renewed push toward transparency and accuracy in the electoral process. With most of the work now complete, authorities are expected to finalize the updated voter list soon, marking a significant step in strengthening electoral integrity in Unnao.
