Kerala Child Rights Panel Registers Case Over Minor’s Suicide, Father Alleges Police Torture
The Kerala child rights commission has registered a suo motu case following a minor boy’s suicide. His father, Naushad, has accused Kodungallur police of harassment, alleging that the teenager was falsely implicated in a romantic relationship case.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the commission said the boy’s father, Naushad, had accused Kodungallur police of falsely implicating his son in a case related to a romantic relationship and subjecting him to physical and mental harassment. The allegations against the police have not been independently verified.
Father Accuses Police of Harassment
In a social media post, Naushad alleged that his elder son confessed to a crime because he could not bear the alleged torture of his younger brother by the police.
The father claimed that the police kept his elder son in custody for nearly three days before producing him before a court, while the minor was presented before the Juvenile Justice Board.
Suicide After Meeting Brother in Jail
According to media reports, the minor, a resident of Ariyad in Kodungallur, died by suicide after meeting his brother, who was lodged in jail.
The commission said the meeting took place after the minor had been released from an observation home.
The commission’s suo motu intervention follows allegations by the boy’s father regarding the treatment of his sons by Kodungallur police. The allegations remain independently unverified, while the commission has registered a case in connection with the minor’s death.
