Pope Leo XIV Diagnosed With Lung Cancer, Undergoes 90-Minute Surgery

Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma and undergone 90-minute surgery to remove a lung nodule. The Vatican says the operation was completed without complications as his public engagements through October 20 are cancelled.

Pope Leo XIV, the head of the Catholic Church, has been diagnosed with lung cancer and undergone surgery to remove the affected portion of his right lung, according to a medical bulletin released by the Vatican on Tuesday. Doctors reportedly removed the lower part of his right lung during an operation that lasted approximately 90 minutes.

According to reports, the 71-year-old Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer. The development marks the first major health problem to emerge during his 17-month tenure. On Sunday, during a prayer service, the Pope disclosed that doctors had detected a nodule in his lung and said he would have it removed.

Two people familiar with the developments, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the operation began on Tuesday evening. The surgery was completed without complications and took around 90 minutes. The Vatican said Pope Leo regained consciousness normally after the procedure and was resting in his hospital room. Medical experts reportedly believe his chances of recovery are very good because the nodule was removed at an early stage.

Pope Leo is expected to remain in hospital for approximately one week following the surgery. In view of his recovery, all his public and official engagements scheduled through October 20 have been cancelled.

Pope Leo, whose birth name is Robert Prevost, was elected by cardinals from around the world in May 2025. Born in Chicago in 1955, he spent several years serving as a missionary and bishop in Peru before becoming head of the Catholic Church. His predecessor, Pope Francis, died in April 2025 at the age of 88.

The diagnosis, surgery and temporary suspension of official engagements have placed Pope Leo's recovery at the centre of attention as the Vatican continues its administrative work and prepares for his scheduled international tour in November.
