Indian Railways Bonus: IRSTA Seeks Salary Cap Hike From ₹7,000 to ₹18,000
Indian Railways bonus revision is in focus as IRSTA seeks to raise the salary ceiling from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000. With nearly 10 lakh employees awaiting clarity, the government’s decision could affect festive-season bonus calculations.
The issue has prompted the Indian Railways Technical Supervisors Association (IRSTA) to urge the central government to revise the salary ceiling to ₹18,000. The association has written to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, seeking changes to the existing bonus calculation framework.
IRSTA has argued that the monthly salary limit of ₹7,000, fixed in 2016, has become unrealistic. According to the association, the existing ceiling no longer reflects the changes in salary levels, making a revision necessary for calculating employees’ annual bonuses.
The association has also demanded that dearness allowance (DA) for employees in Level-2 and above be considered in proportion to their higher salary levels. It has maintained that bonus calculations should reflect the increase in dearness allowance following the implementation of the 7th Central Pay Commission (7th CPC).
The demand has drawn attention among railway employees, many of whom are awaiting the annual bonus ahead of the festive season. An increase in the bonus amount could provide additional financial support to employees and their families as they prepare for the celebrations.
According to the claims in the draft, the government has assured that the matter will be considered seriously. Sources in the Railway Ministry have indicated that a decision could be taken soon. The process of examining employees’ demands has reportedly begun, raising expectations that a revised bonus calculation could be implemented before the festive season. However, no final decision or confirmed implementation date has been provided in the draft.
The annual bonus is significant for railway employees not only as a financial benefit but also as a means of recognising their work and supporting morale. During the festive period, the payment can help employees meet household expenses and celebrate with their families.
Employee organisations such as IRSTA have continued to raise the issue with the government, arguing that revising the calculation formula would make the bonus structure more relevant to current salary levels. Their demand centres on increasing the salary ceiling and accounting for changes in dearness allowance.
The broader economic situation, including inflation and other financial pressures, has also been highlighted as a factor affecting employees’ expectations. For railway staff, a higher bonus could offer additional financial support during a period when household expenses remain a concern.
With the festive season approaching, railway employees are awaiting an official announcement on the proposed changes. Whether the government accepts IRSTA’s demand to raise the salary ceiling from ₹7,000 to ₹18,000 remains to be seen, making the forthcoming decision important for employees seeking a revision of the existing bonus calculation system.
