Beed Ambulance Row: 11-Year-Old Girl, Father Allegedly Forced to Get Down Over Fare
An 11-year-old girl who lost consciousness after a seizure at school and her father were allegedly forced out of an ambulance in Maharashtra’s Beed district over an unpaid fare, sparking public outrage and questions about rural healthcare.
According to the information available, the incident took place on September 29. The 11-year-old girl, a Class 5 student from Dindrud village, suddenly suffered a seizure and lost consciousness while at school. Given the seriousness of her condition, teachers immediately took her to the Dindrud Primary Health Centre. After examining the girl, Medical Officer Dr. Nilesh Dhakane referred her for further treatment.
The family was reportedly provided with an ambulance after the referral, but a dispute allegedly broke out over the fare. The girl’s father was unable to pay the amount demanded by the driver. As a result, the unconscious child and her father were allegedly asked to get down from the ambulance. The incident came into the spotlight after a video surfaced on social media, drawing widespread attention to the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident.
The family is reportedly facing financial hardship. The girl’s mother has passed away, and her father works as a daily-wage labourer to support his four children. The alleged decision to make the unconscious girl get down from the ambulance while she was being taken for further treatment has intensified concerns about access to emergency healthcare for families struggling financially.
The incident has also raised questions about the effectiveness of healthcare initiatives aimed at improving medical services in rural areas. Government programmes such as “Majhe Gaav, Arogya Sampanna Gaav” and the National Child Health Programme are intended to make medical facilities accessible to people in remote areas. Following the incident, questions have been raised about how effectively these initiatives are reaching people at the ground level if economically disadvantaged families continue to face such difficulties during medical emergencies.
Public anger has grown since the video went viral on social media. People have demanded that the ambulance driver’s role be examined and that the responsibility of the officials concerned be determined. The incident has brought renewed attention to the challenges faced by vulnerable families in accessing emergency medical transportation and has raised questions about accountability in the delivery of rural healthcare services.
