Maharashtra Government Announces ₹5,000 Interim Relief for Farmers Before Diwali
Maharashtra's Fadnavis government has announced ₹5,000 in interim relief for all farmers amid drought-like conditions and crop damage. The state plans to transfer the money before Diwali using its own resources.
The assistance is intended to help farmers meet their expenses ahead of the festival as they continue to face financial difficulties caused by natural calamities and crop losses.
According to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the government has declared the entire affected region drought-hit in view of the drought-like conditions reported in several parts of Maharashtra and the damage sustained by crops. The interim assistance has been announced to ease the financial burden on farmers affected by these conditions.
The decision comes with Diwali approaching and concerns over the timely availability of financial assistance from the Centre. Chief Minister Fadnavis clarified that the state government did not expect to receive financial assistance from the Central government before the festival, given the limited time remaining.
Consequently, the Maharashtra government decided to provide immediate relief to farmers using its own resources rather than wait for central assistance. The announcement is aimed at ensuring that farmers receive financial support before the festive period.
The relief package comes as farmers across Maharashtra grapple with the combined impact of natural calamities and crop damage. The government expects the ₹5,000 interim payment to provide financial relief to lakhs of farmers during the festive season.
The administration is working to complete the distribution process before Diwali, with the deadline intended to ensure that eligible farmers receive the assistance in time to meet their festival-related needs.
