Shambhu Tank, district president of the Municipal Employees Union, said the sanitation workers’ strike has been continuing for a month, but instead of resolving their problems, the government is trying to break the strike. He said attempts are being made to suppress the employees’ movement, which will not be tolerated.
Shambhu Tank said the government should abandon its stubborn approach and resolve the employees’ demands. He said the BJP government had earlier described sanitation workers as the backbone, but was now working to break that same backbone. He said sanitation workers play an important role in keeping the country clean and that ignoring them was not appropriate.
Regarding a statement issued by the Chief Minister at night, Shambhu Tank said senior leaders, including state president Naresh Shastri, were discussing the announcements. He said the future strategy would be decided after the matter was discussed in the state-level meeting and whatever decision was taken would determine the next course of action.
Shambhu Tank also said that the sanitation workers do not intend to trouble the public. Therefore, they are no longer dumping garbage on the roads. Instead, garbage is being dumped at 46 dumping points, where workers are preventing it from being lifted. He said that if the government accepts the employees’ demands, they will themselves get the garbage cleared.
