India Vice President Launches Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031 in Lakshadweep

Vice President Radhakrishnan launches Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031 in Lakshadweep to boost ornamental fisheries through better breeding, biosecurity and trade standards while strengthening infrastructure, training and fisher livelihoods.

India’s Vice President Radhakrishnan on Monday launched “Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031” during a Fisheries Outreach Programme in Lakshadweep, unveiling a national plan aimed at expanding ornamental fisheries through improved breeding, biosecurity and trade standards.

The mission seeks to strengthen the ornamental fisheries sector by focusing on better breeding practices, enhanced biosecurity and improved trade standards. The initiative was launched as part of the Vice President’s outreach programme in the Union Territory.

Lakshadweep’s vast 4 lakh square kilometre economic zone holds significant fisheries potential, estimated at over one lakh tonnes. Tuna represents a major opportunity in the region, with the fisheries sector supporting millions of livelihoods and contributing to India’s Blue Revolution.

During the programme, Radhakrishnan was accompanied by officials including Administrator Praful K. Patel and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh. Benefits were distributed to fishers as part of the outreach programme.

The Vice President also highlighted the importance of infrastructure and training to strengthen the fisheries sector and increase incomes across the islands while ensuring responsible development. The launch of Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031 places ornamental fisheries alongside broader efforts to strengthen Lakshadweep’s fisheries potential and support livelihoods through improved sectoral infrastructure, skills and standards.
