CBS News, citing sources, reported that around eight US F-15 fighter jets sustained minor damage in the attack. The aircraft were later returned to service. However, an A-10 Thunderbolt, also known as the “Warthog,” was hit during the attack. Sources said one of the aircraft’s wings was missing.
More than 30 Patriot missiles were fired by US forces stationed in Jordan as they attempted to defend against the Iranian attack. No US military personnel were reported killed in the attack.
The strike came as the war between the United States and Iran continued to intensify. Earlier on Tuesday, the United States attacked five Iranian oil tankers, describing the action as a response to an Iranian attack on a US naval warship.
In response to the US strikes, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC, claimed attacks on eight oil tankers and two warships. The claims included the US military base in Jordan.
US Central Command, or CENTCOM, confirmed that five Iranian crude oil tankers had been disabled. The vessels were identified as Kiwik, Charminar, Horizon 1, Riesco and Derya.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that the US military would continue targeting Iranian oil tankers. Rubio described the action as a response to ongoing Iranian attacks on US naval vessels. According to Rubio, Washington’s strategy is to increase economic pressure on Iran.
The damage reported at the Muwafaq Salti Air Base, alongside the claims of further aircraft and helicopter damage, underscores the escalating military confrontation between the United States and Iran.
