Nepal Glacier Collapse Floods Kill 903, Leave More Than 4,200 Missing

A massive Himalayan glacier collapse triggered floods along the Nepal-China border, killing 903 and leaving over 4,200 missing as rescue teams confront difficult terrain and widespread destruction.

Around August 26, a massive glacier collapse in the Himalayas unleashed devastating floods along the Nepal-China border, destroying villages, bridges, roads and hydropower sites in Nepal’s Rasuwa district and Tibet.

The disaster has pushed the death toll to 903, while more than 4,200 people remain missing. Rescue teams are battling difficult terrain as they continue recovery operations in areas affected by the floods.

Amid the devastation, a school head teacher saved 900 students by evacuating them just before the floodwaters struck. The evacuation prevented the students from being caught in the rapidly advancing waters.

The cause and circumstances surrounding the disaster have also drawn scrutiny. Some people have blamed nearby Chinese construction, while officials have cited climate-driven glacier instability as a factor behind the collapse and resulting floods.
