US Ambassador Sergio Gor Visits Manipur Amid Ethnic Tensions and BRICS Summit
US Ambassador Sergio Gor visited Manipur, meeting CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, exploring key sites and discussing economic ties, tourism and Northeast development.
During the visit, Gor also travelled to key locations across the state, including Kangla Fort and Khwairamband Keithel market. He took a boat ride on Loktak Lake and praised Manipur’s natural beauty and support for Northeast development.
Gor’s visit is among the first by a high-level US official to Manipur amid the ongoing ethnic violence that has continued since May 2023. His meetings with the state’s top constitutional and political leadership placed the focus on economic ties, tourism and development cooperation.
The visit also drew online speculation linking Gor’s presence in the region to the BRICS gathering involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. However, the discussions in Manipur focused on US-India economic ties, tourism potential, the state’s 36 communities and Northeast development.
The engagements, along with Gor’s visits to Kangla Fort, Khwairamband Keithel and Loktak Lake, highlighted state-level cooperation at a time when Manipur remains affected by ethnic tensions. His visit brought renewed attention to US engagement with the state amid the continuing situation.
