Shiv Sena Corporator Ramesh Mhatre Likely to Face Arrest After Doctors' Assault in Kalyan Dombivli Hospital
Maharashtra Police have arrested three people after a violent assault on doctors at a Kalyan Dombivli hospital allegedly involving Shiv Sena Corporator Ramesh Mhatre. The attack, captured on CCTV, led to outrage, government action promises, and a doctors' strike demanding safety and justice.
Police officials have stated that action will also be taken against the corporator and that he is likely to be arrested soon. Assistant Commissioner of Police Suhas Hemade said that police will proceed against Mhatre and arrest him as part of the investigation.
The incident occurred on July 6, and three days later, police arrested three individuals linked to the assault. Although an official complaint has been registered against the corporator, he has not been arrested yet.
Amid growing public anger over the attack, the Maharashtra government has assured an investigation and strict action against those responsible. Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam said, "Assaulting doctors is wrong. We will investigate the matter and take action. If someone has any issue, they must report to the authorities instead of taking the law into their hands."
According to a hospital official, the assault was triggered by a dispute over the unavailability of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) beds. The family of a pregnant woman was informed by doctors that the newborn might require NICU support. However, as all NICU beds at the hospital were occupied, doctors advised the family to consider shifting the patient to another hospital.
CCTV footage from the hospital showed the corporator and a group of men entering a room and attacking medical staff. The footage captured the group punching and slapping hospital employees, with the violent confrontation continuing for more than three minutes.
A female doctor was seen attempting to use her mobile phone during the attack. The footage showed her struggling to stop the attackers while they continued assaulting the staff. When the men attempted to take away her phone, she moved behind a desk and tried to use the device.
During the attack, the corporator suddenly struck the doctor from behind with such force that the phone fell from her hand. He then turned towards other staff members and continued the assault. Mhatre also refused to express regret over his actions.
The hospital remains closed as doctors and staff continue their strike, demanding safety measures and strict action against the Shiv Sena corporator. The incident has intensified concerns over security for healthcare workers and raised questions over attacks on medical professionals while performing their duties.
