A high-level delegation from HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has met Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to fast-track the development of a ₹38,000 crore greenfield shipyard project in Thoothukudi, marking a significant push in India’s maritime industrial expansion.
The proposed facility is projected to generate 15,000 direct employment opportunities and deliver an annual production capacity ranging between 2.5 million and 4 million gross tonnes. The initiative is rooted in Memorandums of Understanding signed in 2025 and 2026 under both previous and current administrations, reflecting sustained policy continuity across governments.
Officials highlighted that the project strategically leverages Thoothukudi’s proximity to a major port and its climatic conditions, which closely align with HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding operations in South Korea. These factors are expected to enhance operational efficiency and global competitiveness of the upcoming yard.
The development is also anticipated to strengthen India’s steel manufacturing ecosystem and logistics network while significantly contributing to the country’s ambition of emerging as one of the world’s leading shipbuilding hubs. Stakeholder responses have emphasized the potential economic transformation of southern Tamil Nadu, particularly through industrial growth and large-scale employment generation.
The project is being positioned as a landmark investment in India’s maritime infrastructure, with expectations of long-term strategic and economic impact on both regional development and national industrial capability.
