Ayush Ministry Recommends Sarvangasana as “Queen of Asanas” Ahead of Yoga Day 2026, Citing Benefits for Hair Health and Healthy Aging
The Ministry of Ayush promotes Sarvangasana as the “Queen of Asanas” ahead of International Yoga Day 2026, highlighting its potential benefits for scalp blood circulation, premature greying prevention, thyroid activation, digestion improvement, and overall healthy aging under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Aging,” encouraging 10–15 minutes daily practice.
According to the Ministry, modern lifestyles marked by stress, sedentary habits, and poor dietary patterns have led to increasing cases of premature greying of hair among young individuals. Regular practice of Sarvangasana is being recommended as a supportive measure to help address this concern. The posture is believed to improve blood circulation by reversing the body’s alignment, thereby enhancing the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the scalp. This improved circulation is said to strengthen hair roots and potentially slow the process of premature greying.
Sarvangasana, also known as the shoulder stand posture, involves lying on the back, lifting both legs upward, and supporting the entire body weight on the shoulders. The Ministry emphasizes that when performed correctly under the supervision of a yoga expert, the asana can offer multiple health benefits.
The Ministry further states that Sarvangasana may help activate the thyroid gland and other endocrine glands, supporting hormonal balance in the body. It is also associated with improved digestion and relief from conditions such as indigestion and constipation. In addition, it is believed to provide benefits in conditions like hernia, hemorrhoids, and certain uterine disorders, while also enhancing overall energy levels and promoting mental calmness.
Authorities have reiterated that yoga is not a form of medicine but a holistic lifestyle practice. They suggest that practicing Sarvangasana for 10 to 15 minutes daily, under proper guidance, may contribute to long-term health and support healthy aging. The Ministry has encouraged people across all age groups to incorporate the practice into their daily routine for sustained well-being.
