Two Indian airports have been featured in the Prix Versailles World’s Most Beautiful Airports List 2026, underscoring global recognition of airport infrastructure that blends architectural brilliance, sustainability, and enhanced passenger experience.
The airports selected are Navi Mumbai International Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 of Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. The announcement places these facilities among a distinguished group of global aviation hubs acknowledged for redefining modern air travel through design innovation and environmental responsibility.
The Prix Versailles awards, presented at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, celebrate excellence in architecture and design across newly developed airports and terminals. The selection criteria focus on innovation, sustainability, cultural identity, and improved user experience, highlighting infrastructure projects that elevate both functionality and aesthetic value.
Navi Mumbai International Airport Terminal 1 was recognised for its distinctive lotus-inspired architectural design, futuristic planning approach, and seamless integration of technology, art, and operational efficiency. The project has been envisioned as a world-class international gateway representing India’s ambitions as a rising global economic power.
In contrast, Terminal 2 of Guwahati’s Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport was honoured for its design inspired by the “Bamboo Orchid,” reflecting the ecological richness of the region. The terminal integrates sustainability with operational functionality while showcasing the cultural and natural heritage of Northeast India.
Other airports featured in the 2026 list include facilities located in Guangzhou, China; Frankfurt am Main, Germany; Kandal Stueng, Cambodia; Pittsburgh, United States; and San Diego, United States. These selections collectively highlight a global shift toward airport infrastructure that prioritises design excellence alongside environmental and passenger-focused considerations.
The recognition reinforces the growing importance of airports as architectural landmarks and economic catalysts. It also reflects a broader transformation in global aviation infrastructure, where sustainability, cultural expression, and passenger experience are becoming central to design philosophy.
