ANNAAMALAI QUITS BJP, LAUNCHES NEW POLITICAL MOVEMENT AS 1.4 MILLION SUPPORTERS JOIN WITHIN 24 HOURS

Annamalai made his separation from the Bharatiya Janata Party official on June 5 and immediately announced plans to begin a new phase in his political career. The departure followed weeks of growing differences with the party leadership. On Friday, the former Indian Police Service officer submitted his resignation, which was subsequently accepted by party president Nitin Nabin.

In his resignation letter, Annamalai referred to multiple discussions with the party's senior leadership and acknowledged disagreements that had persisted for the past 18 months. He stated that he did not wish to place any further burden on the leadership regarding his views on the future of growth-oriented and culturally rooted politics in Tamil Nadu. Following extensive discussions with senior leaders, he concluded that his vision for the state's political direction no longer aligned with that of the party.

Annamalai entered politics in 2020 after leaving the civil services and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. Within weeks, he was appointed state vice president and was elevated to the position of state unit president just a year later at the age of 37.

Describing his latest initiative as the next phase of his public life and political journey, Annamalai called upon young people and ordinary citizens to participate in building a new political alternative. He emphasized that the entry of a common citizen into politics was a significant development and outlined his vision of a people-centric political culture.

He stated that the movement aims to challenge the tradition of permanent legislators and parliamentarians and bring politics closer to ordinary citizens. According to Annamalai, the new platform represents common people's politics with ideological clarity and seeks to end the dominance of personality-driven politics and political dynasties. He said the movement was focused on creating lasting change and laying the foundation for future generations.

Annamalai stressed that building such a movement would require patience and composure, adding that its objectives extended far beyond immediate political gains. He argued that Tamil Nadu required a political framework capable of delivering meaningful and lasting transformation.

The movement, launched under the banner "We The Leaders," witnessed an overwhelming response shortly after its unveiling. At the time of reporting, the platform recorded 13,85,763 active members. The initiative's message to volunteers highlighted the role of grassroots participation in empowering communities, developing leadership, and driving meaningful change across sectors such as education, healthcare, environmental protection, and youth leadership. Supporters were encouraged to begin with local initiatives and contribute to long-term societal progress.

Looking ahead, Annamalai confirmed that the movement intends to contest the next Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu. He said the organization would focus on nurturing a new generation of leaders and promoting a political culture driven by ordinary citizens rather than established political structures.

Reflecting on his decision to enter politics six years ago, Annamalai said his objective had always been to bring positive change to Tamil Nadu and improve the quality of political discourse in the state. He reiterated his belief that politics should not remain the domain of elites and a select few but should be accessible to ordinary citizens. Appealing directly to the public, he urged people to join the movement and place their trust in its vision for the future.

Annamalai's departure from the Bharatiya Janata Party and the swift rise of "We The Leaders" represent a potentially significant shift in Tamil Nadu politics. The scale of public participation within the first day of the movement's launch has positioned it as a development that could influence the state's political landscape in the years leading up to future electoral contests.
