India Strengthens Ties with Nepal’s New Leadership as Modi Holds Talks with Lamichhane
India has intensified engagement with Nepal’s new leadership as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Rabi Lamichhane in New Delhi. Discussions focused on development, connectivity, trade, security, hydropower, and cultural ties following Nepal’s landmark election that delivered the country’s first single-party majority government since 1999.
Lamichhane’s party secured a landslide victory in Nepal’s March snap elections, winning 182 of the 275 parliamentary seats and delivering the country’s first single-party majority government since 1999. The election result marked a significant transformation in Nepal’s political landscape and paved the way for a new administration led by 36-year-old rapper-turned-prime minister Balen Shah.
During the discussions, Modi and Lamichhane reviewed a range of bilateral issues, including development projects, connectivity initiatives, and the long-standing cultural bonds linking the two neighbouring countries. Both leaders emphasized the importance of mutual trust and expressed their commitment to building a prosperous future under India’s Neighbourhood First policy.
Nepal’s new government emerged from a wave of Gen Z-led protests against corruption, reflecting growing public demand for political change. In a clear signal of support for the new administration, India has extended a high-level welcome to Lamichhane, facilitating meetings with senior officials including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Home Minister Amit Shah.
The engagements focused on expanding cooperation in trade, security, and hydropower while addressing challenges that have occasionally strained relations between the two countries, including past border frictions. The series of high-level interactions highlights India’s intention to strengthen strategic, economic, and political ties with Nepal’s new leadership at a pivotal moment in the region’s evolving political landscape.
