His remarks came as a United States trade delegation, led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch, arrived in New Delhi for a three-day round of discussions with Indian negotiators headed by Commerce Ministry Additional Secretary Darpan Jain. Mr Gor is also scheduled to meet Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday.
Describing India and the United States as partners in what he called the most consequential relationship of modern times, Mr Gor said deeper cooperation between the two nations would play a decisive role in shaping the future of global trade, technology, supply chains and security.
He highlighted collaboration under the TRUST initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President Donald Trump. The initiative focuses on strengthening cooperation in key sectors, including artificial intelligence, critical minerals, pharmaceuticals and trusted supply chains.
Mr Gor stated that the proposed trade agreement would create new opportunities for businesses and workers in both countries, further expanding economic engagement and commercial cooperation. He also noted that several major American companies are pursuing expansion plans in India, reflecting growing investor confidence in the country’s market and economic potential.
Underscoring India’s importance in the global healthcare supply chain, Mr Gor said that more than 40 per cent of generic medicines used in the United States are sourced from India, highlighting the country's critical role in supporting American healthcare needs.
Addressing concerns over recent United States tariff measures, Mr Gor clarified that the tariffs are part of a broader global trade review process and are not directed specifically at India. He expressed confidence that the proposed interim agreement would further strengthen economic ties and reinforce the strategic partnership between the two nations.
The progress made in finalising the trade pact marks a significant development in India-United States relations, reflecting the growing depth of cooperation across economic, technological and strategic sectors while laying the foundation for stronger bilateral engagement in the years ahead.
