Supreme Court Grants Vinesh Phogat Relief, Allows Participation in 2026 Asian Games Selection Trials

The order was passed by a bench comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe during the hearing of the matter linked to the Wrestling Federation of India’s challenge against an earlier Delhi High Court decision.

The Wrestling Federation of India had approached the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court order that had already granted permission to Vinesh Phogat to take part in the trials. The apex court upheld the relief, clearing the way for the celebrated wrestler to compete in the upcoming selection process.

During the proceedings, Justice P.S. Narasimha acknowledged the achievements of Vinesh Phogat and remarked that she was an outstanding wrestler who had made the country proud. At the same time, the court stressed the importance of national interest, with the judge stating, “You are a fantastic wrestler. You have made the country proud, but the country comes first.”

The Supreme Court’s decision carries major significance ahead of the 2026 Asian Games selection process, as it ensures the participation of one of India’s most prominent wrestlers in the crucial trials while also reinforcing the authority of the judicial process in sports-related disputes.
