BCCI Bans Smart Glasses in IPL 2026 Over Security Concerns, Orders Mandatory Surrender on Match Days

The BCCI’s ACSU has mandated strict restrictions on smart glasses in IPL 2026, requiring players and staff to surrender such devices before entering PMOA zones. The advisory highlights security risks posed by advanced wearable technology enabling communication, streaming, and recording, with penalties for violations and reinforced anti-corruption protocols across all franchises.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), through its Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU), has issued strict directives for players and support staff participating in the Indian Premier League 2026, mandating the surrender of smart glasses and other advanced wearable eyewear devices on match days before entering regulated areas.

In an official advisory circulated to all franchises, the BCCI stated that certain companies are marketing and selling smart glasses to players and support personnel, which are equipped with advanced communication capabilities. These devices reportedly enable live streaming, sending and receiving text messages, and making audio and video calls via mobile data or Wi-Fi connectivity.

The BCCI clarified that under the minimum standards of the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA), such smart glasses fall under the category of audio and video recording devices as well as communication equipment. As a result, their possession or usage within PMOA zones has been completely prohibited to maintain the integrity and security of the tournament.

The IPL already enforces strict restrictions on the use of mobile phones and other communication devices within designated PMOA areas. The advisory also referenced a recent disciplinary case in which Rajasthan Royals official Romi Bhinder was penalised and cautioned after being caught using a mobile phone inside the team dugout, resulting in a fine of 100,000 rupees.

Reinforcing its latest directive, the BCCI instructed all players and match officials to deposit not only mobile phones and smartwatches but also smart glasses with the Security Liaison Officer prior to entering PMOA zones on match days. The board warned that failure to comply with these requirements would be treated as a violation of PMOA protocols and could result in financial penalties or other disciplinary action under the IPL 2026 minimum standards.
