Udhayanidhi Stalin Clarifies Remarks on Abolishing Sanatana Dharma, Emphasizes Targeting Caste Inequality

DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin clarified his assembly remarks calling for the abolition of Sanatana Dharma, stating he targets caste inequality while supporting temple worship. BJP leader K. Annamalai rejected the explanation, highlighting tensions between social reform and religious beliefs in Tamil Nadu.

On May 12, during the Tamil Nadu assembly session, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader Udhayanidhi Stalin stated that Sanatana Dharma, which he described as dividing people, must be abolished. The remarks echoed his earlier controversial statements, sparking widespread debate across the state.

On May 14, Udhayanidhi Stalin clarified that his comments specifically target the caste system, which he asserts promotes social and economic inequality. Drawing inspiration from Dravidian reformers such as Periyar and B.R. Ambedkar, he emphasized that his position does not oppose temple worship or belief in God.

The statements drew immediate criticism from Bharatiya Janata Party leader K. Annamalai, who equated Sanatana Dharma with Hinduism and rejected Udhayanidhi Stalin’s clarification. The debate highlights the persistent tensions in Tamil Nadu between efforts at social reform and the protection of religious sentiments, particularly amid the administration led by the newly formed alliance under the Thol. Thirumavalavan-led party.

This episode underscores the ongoing discourse in Tamil Nadu over the balance between caste-based social equality and traditional religious practices, reflecting broader political and cultural divides within the state.
