India and United Arab Emirates Sign Strategic LPG Supply and Energy Security Pact Amid Global Energy Crisis
India has signed a strategic LPG supply agreement with the United Arab Emirates amid a global energy crisis triggered by the Iran–United States conflict. The deal, signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s brief visit to Abu Dhabi, also includes a petroleum reserves pact, strengthening India’s energy security amid rising fuel prices and global instability.
India, the world’s second-largest importer of LPG, views the agreement as a critical step to ensure stable fuel availability during heightened geopolitical tensions affecting global energy markets.
The agreement was concluded during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s brief two-hour visit to the United Arab Emirates, underscoring the urgency and strategic importance of the discussions between the two nations.
Alongside the LPG supply arrangement, India and the United Arab Emirates also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on strategic petroleum reserves, further strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy security domain.
The development came just hours after petrol and diesel prices in India were increased by ₹3 per litre each on Friday, May 15, reflecting mounting pressure on domestic fuel pricing amid volatile global crude markets.
During his stopover in Abu Dhabi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The meeting took place en route to the India–Nordic Summit and occurred against the backdrop of ongoing unrest in West Asia, which continues to disrupt global energy stability.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi had urged citizens to adopt work-from-home arrangements to conserve fuel. He also called for increased use of public transport and carpooling for daily commuting in an effort to improve overall energy efficiency across the country.
The series of agreements and diplomatic engagements highlights India’s intensified focus on securing energy supplies and strengthening strategic partnerships at a time of heightened global instability, reinforcing its efforts to safeguard national energy security amid escalating international tensions.
