Seven-Year-Old Ranchi Swimmer Ishank Sets World Record by Crossing Palk Strait in Historic Feat
Seven-year-old Ishank from Ranchi sets a world record by swimming 29 km across the Palk Strait from Sri Lanka to India in 9 hours 50 minutes, becoming the youngest and fastest swimmer to achieve the feat, earning global recognition and bringing pride to Jharkhand and the nation.
Ishank, a resident of Dhurwa in Ranchi, swam nearly 29 kilometres from Talaimannar in Sri Lanka to Dhanushkodi in India, navigating the challenging waters of the Palk Strait in an impressive time of 9 hours and 50 minutes. The achievement, completed on April 30, 2026, marks a rare accomplishment at such a young age, given the unpredictable currents and difficult sea conditions of the route.
For this feat, Ishank has been awarded the “Youngest and Fastest Palk Strait Swimmer” world record certificate by the Universal Records Forum. His success is the result of rigorous preparation, strict discipline, and unwavering determination.
In the lead-up to the record attempt, Ishank underwent intensive daily training, practising for four to five hours at Dhurwa Dam in Ranchi. He received specialised coaching under the guidance of Aman Kumar Jaiswal and Bajrang Kumar, whose training played a crucial role in preparing him for the physically demanding challenge.
Ishank is a Class 3 student at DAV Shyamali, where his achievement has been widely celebrated. The school principal described his accomplishment as a moment of immense pride for the institution, the city of Ranchi, and the entire nation. The principal stated that setting a world record at such a young age while facing challenging sea conditions demonstrates exceptional courage, discipline, and determination.
The principal further emphasised that Ishank’s success proves that with dedication and proper guidance, any goal can be achieved. He also noted that performing such a daring feat at such a young age is rare and inspiring, expressing confidence that Ishank’s achievement will motivate other students and stand as a proud milestone for the school.
Ishank’s record-setting swim not only highlights his extraordinary talent and perseverance but also brings recognition to Jharkhand and India on the global stage, underscoring the remarkable potential of young athletes when supported by disciplined training and expert mentorship.
