Suvendu Adhikari Sworn in as West Bengal’s First BJP Chief Minister After Landslide Election Victory
Suvendu Adhikari has been sworn in as West Bengal’s first BJP Chief Minister after the party won 207 of 294 seats in the April 2026 elections. The ceremony, administered by Governor T.N. Ravi, featured cultural Bengal motifs, Modi honouring veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, ministerial oaths including Dilip Ghosh, and tributes to BJP workers, marking a major political shift and promises of development and peace.
The swearing-in ceremony was distinguished by vibrant cultural presentations featuring Bengal-inspired motifs, reflecting the state’s heritage and identity. The event attracted nationwide attention as Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured 98-year-old veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader Makhanlal Sarkar, a grassroots worker who was arrested in 1952 alongside Syama Prasad Mookerjee during early political movements.
Several newly appointed ministers also took their oaths of office during the ceremony, including senior leader Dilip Ghosh, marking the formal constitution of the new state cabinet following the electoral mandate.
A floral memorial was displayed during the ceremony to honour Bharatiya Janata Party workers who were allegedly killed in earlier incidents of political violence. Party leaders, in their addresses, pledged a governance framework focused on development, stability, and restoration of peace, emphasizing an end to political clashes in the state.
The historic swearing-in represents a significant political transition in West Bengal, with the Bharatiya Janata Party assuming control of the state government for the first time and establishing a new administrative direction under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
